Mysterious old homes, shrouded mountains and valleys hidden between misty ridges; the lure of Eastern Woodland Indians and Scots-Irish settlers in colonial American…this is what I know, what I love.  But I spread out from my Virginia home base to journey into the Carolinas at the height of the Revolution.   Enemy of the King God on Trial ipod is my version of The Patriot. Gone in Sixty Seconds

Pleasant Grove, the home featured in Enemy of the King, was drawn from Drayton Hall, the oldest preserved plantation in America that’s open to the public, located outside of Charleston, SC: http://www.draytonhall.org/

chapel_hillsmscaled_picI also incorporated elements of my Virginia ancestral home, circa 1816, located outside the historic town of Staunton.  Called Chapel Hill, this Georgian style brick house has been in the family for going on eight generations.  The old kitchen, or summer kitchen, a separate building from the main house, is no longer standing but I remember it from my childhood. The smokehouse, stable and some other outbuildings still remain.  The house itself is filled with a wonderful collection of heirlooms.

The ‘snake thing’ in Chapter One of Enemy of the King is drawn from an incident that happened to me at Chapel Hill when I was a girl.  Back in my contest circuit days, more than one judge told me a snake couldn’t possibly get into a house and wind around the antlers of a buck mounted up on the wall.  They can and one did; a rather horrifying discovery for a child to make in the wee hours on her way to the bathroom.   And then there’s the fact that I always suspected the house was haunted…not sure by whom.

Please Welcome Icy Snow Blackstone

BIO: The General’s Daughter video

Icy Snow Blackstone was born in1802, in northern Georgia where her father, the Reverend John Blackstone, an English emigre, was prominent in local politics.  She married a minister, raised at least seven children, one of whom also became a minister, and lived there all her life.  There are no photographs of her available because cameras were not invented at that time. Two hundred and five years later, her great-great-great-great-granddaughter began using her name as a pseudonym for her romance novels. There are no photographs of her because her image has  been known to break cameras!  The present Icy Snow Blackstone lives far from her Southern roots in Orange County, California, where she continues to write romances and is associated with the South Coast Writer’s Association.

Hi ya’ll, Icy Snow Blackstone here.  I’d like to thank Nita for so graciously allowing me to give an excerpt from my newest novel, Jericho Road.  It’s set in the Georgia during the Vietnam Era and I’ll warn you right off–it deals with some pretty controversial subjects and has some fairly strong language in spots!  I also have a paranormal novel, The Irish Lady’s Spanish Lover, which is available as an ebook and large print edition from Double Dragon Publishers, and a futuristic romance, Three Moon Station, released by The Wild Rose Press.  Two other futuristic romances from Lyrical Press, Earthman’s Bride and When the Condor Returns, are scheduled for this summer.

EDITED EXCERPT:

Lindsey looked up at him.  “Is it true that your mother’s folks don’t speak to her just because she married an Indian?”

The Changeling move             “Of course not, and it’s Native American,” he corrected gently, “not Indian.”

“What’s the difference?”  She frowned slightly and he thought it the most endearing little expression he’d ever seen.

“A lot!  Indians are from India.  The people of the Six Nations aren’t!”

“The Six Nations.  Is that what they call themselves?”

“That’s what we call ourselves.  We’re the Kanienhehaka.”

He expected her to make some other comment, about his siding himself with just one people when he was part of both but she didn’t.

Instead, she shrugged and looked at the photo again and said, “Well, I think it would be a stupid way to act!  Why, I’d be proud if someone in my family married an Ind–a Native American!  Or if I were mar–“

She stopped and looked up at him and blushed slightly, “I mean–” and stopped again.

Neither of them said anything, just stood there, looking at each other.

He was standing too close to her, ought to move away.  He could see the quick rise and fall of the tiny breasts, realized that one hand was brushing her hip.  He looked down at her, thinking how utterly small and innocent she looked.

            And white.

“Well?” Lindsey said softly.  “Aren’t you going to kiss me?”

            Logan didn’t move.

“You’ve been wanting to do it for about three hours now, haven’t you?”

            He shook his head.  “Four.”

He put his arms around her, pulling her slight body against his, almost lifting her off the floor.  He felt her rise onto tiptoe and waver toward him before she regained her balance and then the slender arms were around his neck and she was pressing against him, mouth touching his in a very childish, very chaste closed-lip kiss.

He pulled away long enough to mutter, “Lindsey, maybe we’d better–” and she touched his cheek and whispered, “Shh–” and he kissed her again, thrusting his tongue against her lips, feeling them part and welcome his invasion eagerly.

One hand moved to touch one tiny breast, feeling the nipple quiver into tautness against his fingers.  She made a little protesting sound and raised her hand to push against his wrist but as it met resistance let it drop again.  Gently, Logan’s fingers encircled the soft little mound.

He couldn’t know what she was thinking, that abruptly, Lindsey realized that here was a man and not one of those silly awkward boys who were all gropings and heavy breathing.  Here was someone who knew exactly what he was doing and what he wanted and frighteningly, he wanted her.  She knew she ought to stop him–she could stop him with one word–but his hands felt so good touching her, making hot little shivers generate inside her in places she’d never felt them before.

Just a little longer, she thought.  I’ll let him touch me just a little longer and then I’ll tell him to stop..  But she never said the words, not even when Logan picked her up and without taking his mouth from hers, carried her into the bedroom.

Hate to admit it…

I do feel better since I’ve been exercising more. I’m sleeping better, too. Probably because I’m exhausted from all the exercise.  LOL

Vantage Point

Seriously, though. I can tell a definite difference in my energy levels. Of course, I usually do have a bit more energy in the spring when the daylight hours are longer. And I kinda think that maybe the tanning bed has helped a little, too. More Vitamin D tends to put you in a better mood. For me, being more upbeat and “sunny” translates to the motivation to do more during the day. Looking a little better and feeling a bit of accomplishment with the weight loss totals hasn’t hurt anything either. And being so excited about my upcoming vacation has boosted the morale, too.

The combination of all this has me feeling much better lately.  Not that I felt “bad” before. I just didn’t have a lot of energy, and I felt tired all time. Even when I went to bed early, most of the time I just tossed and turned. Not getting enough rest led to even less energy the next day. I wasn’t depressed or anything, I just wasn’t at my best.

I’m convinced that my exercise bike, the Stairmaster, the elliptical, and the AbCoaster are all modern torture devices.  The gym is today’s version of a chamber of horrors. When the sales rep gives you the tour, he should be saying, “These are the cardiovascular machines, what people in medieval times might have called iron maidens. And here we have the weight lifting equipment. These devices isolate individual muscles to apply direct pain much like the  thumbscrews of old.”

Hans Christian Andersen dvd Ugh.  But as much as I dislike exercise, I must grudgingly admit that it seems to be helping with my energy levels. I guess 30-45 minutes of torture is a small price to pay for a days worth of higher energy levels.

Busy Day

I slept in this morning, but I’ve been busy ever since. First on the to-do list was the doctor visit. She praised me again and again for my 23 pound weight loss since I was last in her office. But she didn’t give me any phentermine. She said the phentermine would only help me eat less and since I’m not eating much as it is, it’s not needed. It raises your blood pressure, too.  Mine is under control with medication. So…

After leaving her office with a “Keep up the good work” order, I went to the tanning bed. Yes, I’m still working on that base tan so I won’t burn on my vacation. I burn so easily. It takes a while to get even a light tan because I can only lay in the beds for such a short time.

Scrooged

After the tanning bed, I went to the grocery store and bought fresh fruits and veggies. Then I came home and planted 48 impatiens in my flower pots and beds. After that, I gave my son and his five friends some snack foods and drinks. (They’re studying for the ACT.) Next I peeled potatoes and them up along with onion, squash, zuccini, and boneless skinless chicken breast. Once dinner was in the oven, I set to work peeling apples, cutting up strawberries, washing grapes, and draining canned fruit. There is now a big bowl of fruit salad chilling in the fridge for dessert.

It’s about time for supper now. After that I’m going to the gym.  The exercise has given me more energy, but honestly, by the time I get home, I’m going to be ready for a shower and bed!

Slowly… Too slowly.

Well, I thought I’d made it off that weight loss plateau. On March 28th, I posted about how I’d finally recorded a loss of 4 pounds after three weeks of almost no loss at all. Apparently, that 4 pounds was just a step down to the next plateau.

Here it is three weeks later and I’ve lost only 2 more pounds.  I know, I know.  Two more pounds is a good thing, but I’ve really been working hard, and I’ve seriously been hoping for at least a pound a week. I mean really. Is one pound a week such an unrealistic goal? I’m still counting every calorie and I’m still working out regularly. I’ve even increased the intensity- level 2 on the Stairmaster now, 7 points more resistance on the elliptical, and more weights on the AbCoaster.

It seems like the harder I work at trying to lose the weight, the more stubborn that fat becomes. And the more disappointing and depressing. {big sigh} What I need is to go to some place like the people on The Biggest Loser.  You know, where I don’t have to work eight hours sitting at a computer. And I’d have chefs to cook great tasting, low-calorie food for me. No worries about shopping for groceries, what to cook, or how to cook it.  That way I can spend all my time working out, swimming, walking, playing– just doing activities that burn off that fat.  It’s so hard to do it “in real life.”  Shows like The Biggest Loser are billed as “Reality” shows.  NOT!  Show me a woman who works 40+ hours a week at a sit-down job and cooks for her family who can lose 5 pounds a week. Now that’s a reality show I’d like to see. But then, in reality, that would be almost impossible.

Well, I have a doctor’s appointment (just a check-up) on Monday. I’m sure she’ll be very pleased with the 23 or 24 pound loss I’ve achieved thus far. I think I’m going to talk to her about some diet aids. Maybe she can give me something that will help. I know there’s no magic pill, but maybe there’s something that, along with the diet and exercise, will help me burn more calories or increase my metabolism. Years ago, I had some good results with phentermine. Maybe that would help.  It helped before.
